Alexa-Jane (AJ) Hoidahl

My journey in figure skating began in a Mom and Me class at the age of three at Bielenberg Ice Arena.  From there I spent my winters skating on frozen lakes, participating in group lessons, private lessons and competed in various solo categories, team compulsories, ensembles and synchro teams.  In 2009 I started working as an assistant figure skating coach and never looked back.

I coach because I want to help athletes become a better version of themselves both on and off the ice.  My favorite parts of coaching are watching an athlete have an “aha” moment or seeing them form their own identity and style on the ice. I believe in positive reinforcement, hard work, trying your best and enjoying your journey just as much as your destination.

I aim to use my figure skating experiences as an athlete and a coach in my professional world out-side of the rink as well.  I am currently a Clinical Psychology Doctoral student at Augsburg University.  My long-term goal is to become a Licensed Psychologist (LP) as well as a Certified Mental Performance Consultant (CMPC) through the Association for Applied Sport Psychology (AASP) and be listed on the United States Olympic Committee’s (USOC) Sport Psychology registry.

Using a holistic approach in coaching allows the athlete to have their mind and body work as a team.  I regard the mental side of sport just as important as the physical side of sport.

I love being able to share my passion for figure skating with other athletes and professionals and making a difference in the lives of others. I want to contribute to a better future and help improve the system of figure skating for future generations of skaters and coaches. To quote Speed Skater Dan Jansen, “If you use your sport to make you a better person, then you’ve won”.
