WFSC  Recognition Criteria

(May 20, 2010)

§        Lettering Awards

To be eligible to receive a varsity chenille letter, student participant must meet the following criteria:

  1. The skater must be in at least the 7th grade when applying for a lettering recognition.

  1. The skater must skate a minimum of 150 hours, 100 hours of which needs to be skated at WFSC ice during the skating season. Only contracted club ice will count toward the total number of hours.  Non synchro skaters that wish to letter, and are skating at other rinks, need to ensure that they are skating 2 contracts at Woodbury per contract season, to letter. Up to 50 hours can bedone at other rinks. In addition, the hours skated as well as the coach required off-ice practice sessions associated with Synchro team membership count towards the fulfillment of this requirement.

  1. The skater must attempt at least one US Figure Skating official test per skating season, with the exception of a skater who has passed their Senior Moves in the Field and/or Freeskating tests.

  1. Skaters advance through the US Figure Skating test structure judged by certified National US Figure Skating Judges. The skater must pass one of the following minimum threshold requirements to receive a letter:

    1. Juvenile Moves in the Field

    1. Pre-Silver Dances

    1. Participated 4 or more years in the WFSC Synchronized Skating Program, and is currently active on a WFSC “varsity” Synchronized Skating Team. A “varsity” team is defined as the top-level team that participates in at least four (4) Synchro competitions during the skating year – two (2) of which must be USFS sanctioned events. (If askater is on the roster of the middle line but crosses over to the top line to improve his or her skills, that is not considered as active on the “varsity” line. If a skater is on the roster of the top line but is able to cross over to the middle line to make that line stronger (due to age, for example) that skater is considered to be on the “varsity” line.

  1. The skater must participate in at least 3 “public” events per skating season, such as competitions (Individual or Synchronized Team), ice shows and exhibitions. At least one of the events must be a US Figure Skating competition and at least one must be an ice show (e.g., the annual Woodbury Spring Ice Show).

  1. The WFSC Board Recognition representative will collect the appropriate information from the club Test Chair and Contract Coordinator by April boardmeeting of each year. The WFSC Board Recognition representative will verify that the participation has taken place and that the number of hours the skater has contracted during the skating season meets the lettering criteria. The Board representative will then propose to the Board the list of awardees for the season just completed at the AprilBoard meeting prior to the annual WFSC Banquet. The Board will then approve the list proposed. The Board may also grant letters to skaters at its discretion if certain of the above criteria are not met due to special circumstances. We will make no attempt to define “special circumstances” in this policy. The WFSC Board will have the authority to determine what these are on a case by case basis.

  1. Upon confirmation of the above information, the WFSC Board Recognition representative will purchase the appropriate varsity chenille letter and skate emblem for the skater using WFSC funds. The presentation of the letter will take place at the annual WFSC Banquet. Purchase of the letter jacket itself and the attachment of the letter and emblem are the financial responsibility of the skater and her/his family.
